Daniel Cormier could be fighting for the UFC heavyweight title, but it won't happen as long as Cain Velasquez is the champion. Cormier is in the same situation as Rory MacDonald is at welterweight with Georges St-Pierre - both fighters have friends who are the champs, and they won't fight them.
So Cormier will only get a title shot at heavyweight if Velasquez is defeated against Bigfoot Silva or perhaps Mark Hunt or Junior Dos Santos down the line. Out of these three fighters, it seems that JDS has the best shot, and Cormier agrees with that assessment.
For the time being the option to fight at 205 is available to Cormier, and Dana White seems to think that he could just jump in there and get a title shot. But at the same time, we have Alexander Gustafsson and Lyoto Machida who are waiting for their crack at Jon "Bones" Jones.
But the big problem for Cormier is he isn't super enthused and confident that he can easily make 205. It would take a big weight cut, a lot of time, and effort. So Cormier's aspirations of becoming a UFC champion at the moment are in a state of limbo. He is a top contender at heavyweight but won't take a shot at the belt so long as Velasquez is wearing it. He doesn't want his teammate to fall from the mountain, but the only way he will get a shot at gold is if he does.
